Countless verses in the Bible speak about a specific organ in the human body that is extremely dangerous; the tongue.

The Tongue – What you need to know

So, here are some key verses about this organ called the tongue…

“James 3:5-9”

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.9 With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.

Proverbs 18:20-24

The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Matthew 12:36-40

36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words, you will be acquitted, and by your words, you will be condemned.”

These are only a few of the many verses in the Bible that talk about just how much trouble your mouth could get you in and not just trouble here on earth but also eternal trouble. The things you say could literally lead you straight to hellfire. And you are going to spend the rest of eternity (which is a very long time btw) regretting every negative, inappropriate, hurtful and deceitful word that ever came out of your mouth.

THE TONGUE OF JESUS

The only person who actually had the right to say whatever He wanted and do whatever He wanted, including talking back to people DID NOT!

In the story of Jesus’ crucifixion, some major events that take place are the several trials Jesus had to undergo before being officially sentenced to crucifixion. In these trials, the judges, the religious leaders, the citizens were ALL against Him, and THEY WERE WRONG! All He had to do was snap His fingers, and ALL his accusers would drop like flies! But you know what… the Bible says that JESUS STAYED SILENT!

The only time He replied was out of respect to the authority when they asked Him a specific question, and all He said was basically “Yes.” Jesus said Himself before His arrest that there were 72 000 (12 legions – 1 legion = 6 000) angels ready to come at any time to take care of Him.

You know what Jesus’ silence before His accusers teaches us Christians…

God is fighting for us, and we do not have to answer to anybody but God
● Our accusers don’t even deserve an answer. Therefore, the less we talk, the less sin we commit
● Though anger may arise as we are being accused, staying silent you willingly choose to not sin out of your anger
● Jesus will speak for you

If Jesus out of all people in this world stayed silent when He is God in the flesh… what does that say about our behaviour as mere humans, especially in situations like His when we know, and they know everything they are saying is a lie.

What is MY TONGUE LESSON

the tongue

My friend, eternity is at stake with everything you do, including what you speak. Therefore, let your words here on earth be very few, but let your actions speak for you.

Jesus’ Resurrection three days after the trial spoke to the people more than anything that He spoke or could have spoken. Rather than defending Himself, He let His actions speak, and people saw and could not deny what happened. He did not have to say a word because the evidence was right there in front of them. His accusers became believers, and this is still taking place today!

Silence is key!
