10 COMMON MISTAKES BLOGGING FOR BEGINNERS MAKES

Almost all new bloggers make these 10 mistakes. Of course, there are more, but these are my 10 biggest mistakes to avoid.

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 1 – WRITING STRATEGY

I discovered that many new bloggers start writing blog posts without their target audience in mind. It’s crucial to know who your readers are. Deliver to them because it’s challenging to write for everyone. I felt this was a significant mistake. I took it seriously and invested in books and online classes. My goal was to become a better target for my readers.

So probably you should have thought about these books (1, 2, 3). Because everyone writes, but good writers serve the reader.

The fundamental strategy for writing is to get into your reader’s mind. And write to answer any questions that the reader has when on your blog.

As long as you’re blogging, surround your content with the reader in mind. This blogging tip keeps them coming back. Not to mention, the latest research shows that this is an easy way to build your community.

Blogging Tips

  • Write evergreen content – when you start your blog, stay away from seasonal/trendy topics until you have an audience.
  • Write 1000-2500-word blog posts – that is the ideal length to get Google’s attention and SEO. I used to write 300-word blog posts until I learn from the expert Neil Patel.
  • Have blogging ideas and a topic calendar.

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 2 -WEBSITE STRATEGY

It’s apt that you use a professional theme. Your website is a place to convert readers into customers. That’s the mindset you should have when choosing a blogging theme. I had a repulsive website theme when I started and lost readers.

Here are some things to think about when selecting a website theme.

Blogging Tips:

  • Use fonts and sizes that are easy to read. The best is Google fonts.
  • Get a responsive website theme.
  • Have a legal policy on your website.
  • Install the right plugins. Send me an email if you want me to write a post on the best plugins.
  • Have a Home, About and Service landing page.

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 3 – COMMUNITY STRATEGY

It seems to me that all new bloggers forget the importance of community. I, too, felt for this mistake. When it comes to community, you have to focus on authenticity. And you’ll need to be vulnerable and consistent with your storytelling.

Storytelling is a good way to share your experience and teach people in your community. The real truth is I struggle with this point as a blogger in the beginning stages. To be honest, I’m authentic but private with my personal life.

So, I changed my mindset, set boundaries and learned what and how to share my life.

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 4 – FREEBIE STRATEGY

This mistake was held up on my website. Don’t make this mistake – set it up now! You must add value to your reader. So, an opt-in for your blog post is essential.

These freebies are used in exchange for email sign-ups.
Here is an example of freebies to create as a new blogger:

  • Checklist templates
  • Blog planners
  • Daily routine checklist
  • E-books
  • Planners

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 5 – SEO STRATEGY

I definitely made this blogging mistake and had to go back and fix 50 + blog posts. So you should focus on SEO. It’s not fun, but essential for your blog.

Now everyone recommends Y.O.A.S.T. because it’s a free plugin. Unfortunately, it’s not one I would let you get. Get Rank Math plugin. It’s one of the best SEO plugins.

Regardless of what plugin you get, make it a priority to learn SEO. You can take a certification course or Neil Patel website.

Right from the start, you need to start collecting emails. Email marketing is the best way to build your community. It’s an excellent opportunity to turn your email list into a business in the future.  Also, subscribe to your competitors’ and model what is working for them.

Blogging for Beginners: Mistakes 8 – SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

Don’t go crazy, starting an Instagram account first. That’s the most significant drawback I made. Instagram is not the place for a new blogger. Although the platform is free, remember you don’t have a trusted audience to rally with you.

So, they will not read your blog post. Albeit it’s well written with valuable content.

To be real, this is still a struggle. I’m a part-time blogger, and my job requires a lot of time. So, I have not committed to a strict schedule. Additionally, I post 4 times a month, with a word limit of 1500-2000. I update old posts every day for Pinterest and SEO.
