How To Stage Your Photoshoot planning checklist

Here is a photoshoot planning checklist with ideas for your photo session.

photoshoot planning checklist

1. Craft your photoshoot story

Images are a way to let your readers feel you and engage with the content. So when planning your photoshoot ideas design a story to get your audience’s attention and absorb the message.

2. Research your topics and content

Knowing the theme and content is key before getting into anything. This will guide you on what story and mood you want for your shoot. It also helps the photographer to understand what their client need.

3. Create an inspiration file

This file gives you the concepts for the shoot. So, when creating it, group them into these subfolder categories:

  • Hairstyle inspiration – hairstyle is my best accessory. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to experiment!
  • Poses inspiration – you need to find inspo and practice in the mirror at home, then you’ll not be looking uncomfortable and stiff.
  •  Location – go to places with excellent lighting. I love golden hour shoots or late evenings for an outdoor shoot.
  • Makeup – natural makeup depending on your outfit changes. Its beauty, have a facial before and remove any facial hair. Your photographer would have minor editing, and your skin will look smooth.
  • Outfit – Plan outfits that fit and flatter your shape. I recommend choosing a colour palette that reflects the story and mood. Before I forget, plan to wear the proper undergarment (seamless and neutral – skin tone)
  • Props – my favorite places for inspiration are magazines, editorial photoshoots, Pinterest, travel, movies, websites and going for a walk. I use Instagram sometimes, but I try to limit it because everyone looks the same on that app now. That said, I spend more time digging my creative mind.

4. Mood board

The power of a mood board is my vitality into the season and story style. I follow a type that inspires my pictures, brand and clothes I choose. This will help you choose outfits and make it easy for your photoshoot.

Start to create different mood boards, for example, wardrobe, color palette, aesthetic, inspiration and more.

5. Get up early, and create good vibes

This could be meditating, dancing, music, anything that gives your dopamine a boost to shoot.

Final thoughts

That’s my wisdom on how I prepare for a photoshoot. If you have any other ideas, share them in the comments, I’ll be happy with some additional ideas for my future shoots.
